Late Winter to Early Spring is Ideal

The absolute best time to trim most trees in northern Minnesota is between late winter and early spring—typically February through April. Here’s why:

Dormant Trees Heal Faster

When trees are still dormant, they handle cuts better. They’re not putting energy into new growth yet, so they can focus on healing.

Better Visibility

Without leaves in the way, it’s easier to see a tree’s structure. That means cleaner cuts and fewer mistakes.

Lower Risk of Disease

Many diseases and pests are inactive during colder months, reducing the chance of infection after trimming.

Proceed with Caution for Summer Trimming

Summer trimming is sometimes necessary. Removing storm damage or low-hanging limbs near trails and structures should not wait. However, for most species, heavy summer pruning can stress the tree, especially in hot or dry conditions.

Tips for Safe Summer Trimming

  • Stick to light shaping or removing dead branches.
  • Avoid trimming oak trees, as they are susceptible to oak wilt, a deadly fungal disease.

Avoid Trimming in Fall and Early Winter

Trimming in fall might seem convenient, but it’s often the worst time for most tree species. As trees go into dormancy for the winter, they do not have the energy to heal new wounds. Their energy is instead shifting into the roots as the cold rolls in. Since the wounds won’t heal quickly, the tree is left vulnerable to pests and fungal spores that are still active until deep winter. Save major trimming for earlier in the year unless there’s an immediate hazard.

Trimming Timing by Tree Type

Different species respond better at different times.

  • Oak: Trim only in winter to prevent oak wilt.
  • Maple & Birch: Best trimmed in late winter before sap flow begins.
  • Pine: Trim in late fall to early winter.
  • Fruit Trees: Prune in late winter to encourage spring growth.
