1. Eastern White Pine

Needle type: Long, soft needles in bundles of five
Bark: Smooth and gray when young; dark and scaly with age
Height: Can exceed 100 feet

White pine, Minnesota’s state tree, is one of the tallest and most iconic trees in the state. You’ll spot it easily by its towering height and “feathery” branches.

2. Northern Red Oak

Leaves: Lobed with pointed tips
Bark: Dark, with flat ridges forming shiny stripes
Acorns: Round, with shallow caps

Red oaks are strong, fast-growing, and common in both urban and forested areas. Their leaves turn brilliant red in the fall.

3. Sugar Maple

Leaves: Classic maple shape with five lobes
Bark: Gray and smooth when young, becoming rough and shaggy
Fun fact: Source of real maple syrup!

The sugar maple lights up autumn with vivid oranges and reds. Its sap is also used to make maple syrup—a true Minnesota staple.

4. White or Black Spruce

Needles: Short, stiff, and sharp—attached individually to branches
Bark: Thin and flaky
Shape: Classic pyramid with dense branches

Spruce trees are common in northern Minnesota and are often used for windbreaks and shelterbelts. Black spruces typically don’t grow to the same heights as white spruces.

5. Quaking Aspen

Leaves: Roundish with flattened stems—tremble in the breeze
Bark: Smooth, greenish-white
Growth: Often grows in large clonal groups

Quaking Aspens are fast-growing pioneers that are usually among the first trees to populate a cleared area. They’re also a favorite for wildlife.

6. American Basswood

Leaves: Heart-shaped and large
Bark: Gray and ridged
Flowers: Pale yellow and fragrant, attract bees

A shade-loving hardwood, basswood is prized for both its wood and its value to pollinators. These trees often reach heights of 60-80 feet.
