Where Arbor Day Started

Arbor Day began in Nebraska in the late 1800s. The Great Plains were mainly treeless then, and settlers quickly realized how valuable trees were—not just for wood but also for windbreaks, shade, erosion control, and overall land health.

A newspaper editor and nature lover named J. Sterling Morton was one of the first to advocate for a day dedicated to planting trees. On April 10, 1872, Nebraska held the first official Arbor Day, and it’s estimated that more than a million trees were planted that day.

Arbor Day Goes National

The idea caught on fast. Other states began adopting their own Arbor Days, adjusting the date based on local climate and planting seasons. In 1970, President Richard Nixon made Arbor Day a national observance, giving it a permanent place in our country’s calendar of conservation efforts.

Today, Arbor Day is recognized in all 50 states—usually in April, when conditions are ideal for planting in most areas. Minnesota celebrates State Arbor Day on the last Friday in April, though tree planting can stretch well into May, depending on the weather. Minnesota’s Arbor Day lands on April 25th in 2025.

Why Arbor Day Still Matters Today

Arbor Day is more than a tradition. It’s a reminder that trees are essential to land health, wildlife habitat, and long-term sustainability. For property owners in northern Minnesota, maintaining a balanced, healthy forest is both a responsibility and an investment.

Planting the right trees at the right time and places has numerous benefits for landowners and the environment. Trees can prevent erosion, protect soil, improve wildlife habitat, and enhance property value.

While Arbor Day focuses on planting, it’s also a good time to think about clearing overcrowded trees, removing hazardous limbs, or creating firebreaks. Good land management isn’t just about planting—it’s about balance.
